As I Lay Me Down to Sleep

I remember my mom teaching me that awful poem, “As I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.  If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”

Did some demented fairy sprinkle bad fairy dust on mothers in the 1950s?

Who would recite those lines before bedtime?

Oh yes, my mother.

And I am burying her tomorrow.  I pray she sleeps well.  She did the best she could, and I honor her for that.

Really bad poem, Mom…we’ll talk about it when I get there.
